“Future”
Guest Editor: Ananya Vajpeyi
For more than 30 months between April 2021 and December 2023, between 40 and 60 individuals-art historians, urban geographers, heritage experts, architects, conservationists, curators, academics, journalists, lawyers, writers, artists, photographers, scholars, activists, environmentalists and concerned citizens, environmentalists and concerned citizens, including one opposition MP, joined hands to educate the public and challenge the Government of India on the matter of the Central Vista Redevelopment in the heart of the capital. We wrote op-eds, research articles, and statements to gather signatures; we sent letters to concerned officials; we recorded interviews with the press; we called, messaged and corresponded with one another almost continuously; we filed pleas and petitions in court; we gave talks and led heritage walks; we met with the government’s planners and designers; we raised questions in Parliament; we studied the history of other cities around the world that had similar layouts, similar ruling regimes, and similar layouts, similar ruling regimes, and similar episodes of dramatic urban transformation driven above all by politics. This issue of AROOP is a record of our collective conversations and efforts in the matter of the Central Vista Redevelopment in Delhi, before, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
