The Raza Foundation through its series ‘Art Matters’ provides a platform for open discussion on such issues. It endeavors not only to release the true essence of art from the clutches of definitive modernist approach in order to grasp myriad ways of extolling art, but also to stir up debate on the changing meanings of social and political theoretical concepts like rights, justice, liberty, citizenship, etc. Well known, renowned scholars and practitioners from all the diverse fields of arts, dance, music, social science, poetry, and so on are invited for this purpose.

Here, we publish the twenty second panel discussion of ‘Art Matters’, titled ‘Major Departures in Arts of Our Times’ featuring Anuradha Kapoor, Arundhathi Subramaniam and Abhay Sardesai.

Anuradha Kapur is an Indian theatre director and professor of drama. She taught at the National School of Drama (NSD) for over three decades and was the Director of NSD for six years (2007-2013). For her work as a theatre director, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardwas conferred on her in 2004.

Arundhathi Subramaniam is the award-winning author of twelve books of poetry and prose. Widely translated and anthologised, her volume of poetry, When God is a Traveller was the Season Choice of the Poetry Book Society, shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize.

Abhay Sardesai is the Editor of ART India, the country’s premier art magazine, since November 2002. Under his editorship, the magazine has developed a Culture Studies-oriented approach and has become more inter-disciplinary in its theme-based explorations. He has been a Visiting Faculty in Aesthetics at the Department of English, University of Mumbai, and has also been the Chair of Humanities, Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture, Mumbai.

The event was organized at the Indian International Centre on 13th of August 2014.
