Vivek Das (born 1989) creates sculptures in this contemporary period of art even though his work cannot be classified into a particular genre. His sculptures are about solidity and form evoking an inner life force but also enhancing the sculpture's undulating rhythm. They have a sense of presence, with it's thrusting tension, force and vitaity.
Using a traditional yet time worn art of papier mache he explores the radical potential of the medium to shape his sculptures, he models and occasionally carves the paper to achieve the desired shape, creating a sort of hybrid of sculpture and drawing. His admiration for paper's tactile qualities, the subtlety of colors, and softness of it's shadows evokes a sense of physical space through these works. He appriciates the Papier mache for its accessibility, and explores the medium in various ways as it requires no kiln, foundry or any harsh chemicals, in other words it is Eco-friendly.
Vivek is based in Ranchi Jharkhand and did his Graduation and Post Graduation(2016) in fine arts from Banaras Hindu University. And is an independent practicing artist since then. He has actively participated in numerous art events including solo show in Art & soul gallery Mumbai 2021, CIMA award show2022 and a number of group shows in Jharkhand, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Banaras and Bhubneshwar and his works are in private and Government collections in India.
